​Lemongrass contains a compound called citral, which some laboratory studies have found to be capable of inducing cancer cell death (apoptosis) and inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. One piece of work from BGU (or at least via the BGU Research Portal) titled “Effects of citral against cancer, and against pathogens of humans and fruits” reports that citral (which is found in lemongrass) “induced apoptosis in several hematopoietic cancer cell lines. The compound was found to kill cancer cells grown in cell culture, without affecting normal cells.”
